To a beaker add 35 g of tert-butyl alcohol and 120 mL of conc. HCl, stir the solution vigorously for 20 minutes, thereafter pour the mixture into a separatory funnel. Discard the bottom layer and wash the remaining organic layer twice with 15 mL of saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and once with 20 mL of water. The organic layer is distilled and the fraction is collected between 49-51°C, the distillate is dried with some anhydrous magnesium sulfate.
