Synthesis of Sodium picramate

A solution is prepared from 10 g of picric acid dissolved in 100 mL of water, whereto a solution prepared from 1.9 g of NaOH in water is added with stirring. A solution is prepared from 24 g of sodium sulfide in 40 mL of water, which is poured into a separatory funnel. A slow addition over  30 minutes is started at a temperature of 50°C with stirring, after which the mixture is filtered. The product may be air dried.
