Synthesis of PETN (Pentaerythritol tetranitrate)

100 mL of white fuming nitric acid is placed in a beaker immersed in an ice-salt bath. A slow addition of 22 g of fine pentaerythritol is started with vigorous stirring. The mixture must be kept below 15°C at all time. After the addition, the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes and then poured into 500 mL of water. The mixture is filtered and washed with water multiple times
