Synthesis of Nitroisobutylglycerol (NIBG)

To a reflux apparatus in an ice bath add 2 g of potassium carbonate dissolved in 200 mL of  30% formaldehyde, thereafter slowly add 50 mL of nitromethane, stirring is not needed. After some time, a vigorous reaction takes place, followed by gradual darkening, after the vigorous reaction has stopped, the solution is poured into an evaporation dish and heated at 75°C until the crude product is dry. The crude product is then recrystallized with hot ethanol.
