Synthesis of Malononitrile

To a reflux apparatus equipped with a magnetic stirrer is added 100g of cyanoacetamide, 101 g of phosphoryl chloride, 2.19 g of pyridine and 314 ml of dichloroethane, the mixture is stirred and refluxed for 6h thereafter cool down. The cooled mixture is filtered, washed with 2x50ml of DCE and then the liquid is distilled under the presence of 70mg of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) under vacuum. The high purity distilled malononitrile needs to be stored with the presence of 25mg of BHT.
