Synthesis of Valeric acid

75 g of potassium permanganate and 4 g of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in 1000 mL of water. With stirring, 3o mL of 1-pentanol is added to the solution and let to stand for 24h. Then the mixture is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated down to 50 mL with a hot water bath. The mixture is acidified with sulfuric acid and the organic layer is washed with sodium carbonate solution. The organic layer is then subject to a removal of water with an anhydrous salt.
