Synthesis of Guanidine nitrate from Guanidine carbonate

50 g of guanidine carbonate is dissolved in 150 mL of water, an addition of conc. nitric acid is started with vigorous stirring, the addition is suspended when carbon dioxide evolution ceases. The solution is then poured into an evaporating dish and the solution is dried. The crude product is then recrystallized from hot water.
