Synthesis of Glycine from Chloroacetic acid

A solution prepared from 3.2 g of ammonium carbonate, 10 mL of 25% aq. ammonium hydroxide and 4 mL of water is cooled down in an ice bath. After which, a slow addition of 1.1 g of chloroacetic acid and 3 mL of water is started, with stirring. The mixture is then left to agitate at 50°C for 40h, then the solution is boiled down until only 3 mL of liquid remains and let to cool down. The solidified crude product is crushed down and washed with 25 mL of methanol.
