In a beaker 40 g of ethyl cyanoacetate is combined with 30 mL of conc. ammonium hydroxide with stirring, after the solution becomes clear again the beaker is immersed in an ice-salt bath for an hour. Thereafter the mixture is cooled down to -5°C to crystallize out the rest of the cyanoacetamide, the mixture is filtered and washed with 10 mL of cold ethanol. Recrystallize the product from hot ethanol.
