Synthesis of Copper(I) chloride via reduction with Sodium bisulfite

52 g of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate and 13.5 g of sodium chloride are dissolved in 167 mL of warm water, to which a solution prepared from 11 g of sodium bisulfite and 7.3 g of sodium hydroxide in 84 mL of water is added with stirring. The mixture is then filtered, washed with water and the residue is dried in an oven.

CuSO4 + 2 NaCl = CuCl2 + Na2SO4

NaOH + NaHSO3 = Na2SO3 + H2O

2 CuCl2 + Na2SO3 + H2O = 2 CuCl + Na2SO4 + 2 HCl
