Synthesis of Beryllium Acetylacetonate

A suspension is prepared from 1.1 g of basic beryllium carbonate and 15 mL of water, the suspension is acidified with 6M HCl solution until the pH reaches 2.5. Then a separate solution is prepared from 20 mL of water and 3 g of acetylacetone which is basified with 6M ammonium hydroxide until the pH reaches 8.5. Both solutions are combined with stirring, after which the solution is basified with 6M ammonium hydroxide until the pH reaches 5-6.  The mixture is filtered and washed with water. The crude product is then recrystallized with 40-60°C hot petroleum ether.
