Synthesis of Benzyl chloride

Combine 33 g of zinc chloride and 160 mL of conc. hydrochloric acid, after which start adding slowly benzyl alcohol. With stirring heat at 60°C for 3h. Cool the solution down to room temperature, pour it into separation funnel, discard the bottom layer, add conc. sodium carbonate solution. Collect the bottom layer add some anhydrous calcium chloride to remove water. Set up for a distillation apparatus and distill the benzyl chloride in vacuum at 180°C. Add some anhydrous calcium chloride to remove the water from the distillate and then some anhydrous sodium carbonate to remove dissolved hydrochloric acid.
