Synthesis of Benzyl Acetate

To a reflux apparatus add 30 mL of benzyl alcohol, 43 mL of glacial acetic acid and 2 mL of conc. sulfuric acid. Reflux for 10 h, cool down and pour the solution to 200 mL of water with 50 g of sodium carbonate dissolved into. Pour into a separatory funnel and discard the aqueous layer, dry with anhydrous calcium chloride. Distill the crude product by discarding the matter which distills off before 200°C.
