Synthesis of Amphetamine Sulfate

Combine 100 mL of glacial acetic acid and 50 mL of water in 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Then dissolve 10 g of P2NP in 100 mL of warm isopropanol. While the P2NP mixture cools down, prepare the amalgam, cut 16 g of thick aluminum foil into 1×1 pieces put them to 200 mL of water and add 100 mg of mercury(II) nitrate, stir for 15 minutes and then wash the foil with 100mL of water 3 times. Then add the foil to the acetic acid and stir for 5 minutes, then slowly add the P2NP solution over 10 minutes, stir for 30 minutes, add a reflux condenser because the solution will start to gently boil. Reflux the solution for 1 h, cool down and slowly add 100 g of sodium hydroxide dissolved in 100 mL of cold water with stirring. Pour the mixture into a separatory funnel and collect the top layer, isolate the remaining amphetamine from the aqueous solution with 2x 40 mL of DCM. Combine 2 mL of sulfuric acid and 10 mL of IPA, add it to the organic extract. Recrystallize from hot water.
