Synthesis of 4-(hydroxymethyl)-2-iodo-6-methoxyphenol

In a beaker dissolve 5.7 g of 5-Iodoethylvanillin in 20 mL of ethanol, immerse the beaker in an ice bath and a slow addition of 0.75 g of sodium borohydride dissolved in 5.7 ml of 1M NaOH is started with stirring. The temperature should be maintained below 20°C. The mixture should be stirred for 1h after the addition thereafter filter and wash with some cold water. Dry in the open air and recrystallize with hot ethanol.
