Synthesis of 4-Chloroacetophenone

To a reflux apparatus add 38 g of dry aluminum trichloride, 50 mL of carbon disulfide and 12.8 mL of chlorobenzene, heat to about 60°C and then slowly with stirring introduce 12 mL of acetic anhydride while maintaining gentle reflux, reflux after addition for 1h. Distill the carbon disulfide off and pour the still hot residue to 100 mL of ice and extract twice with 50 mL of ether, wash several times with water and dry over anhydrous calcium chloride. Fraction distill the solution and collect the fraction of 230-240°C.
