Synthesis of 3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzaldehyde

Dissolve 153 g of syringaldehyde in 1 L of acetone and then add 127 g of dimethyl sulfate, 118 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 3 g of potassium hydroxide dissolved in 32 mL of water to the solution. Stir in reflux for 18 h and distill the acetone off until the solution slurries. Pour the mixture into 1L of ice water. Filter and recrystallize the crude product with cyclohexane.
