Synthesis of 2-Thiohydantoin

4 g of thiourea is dissolved in 40 mL of water and to this solution, 2.48 g of chloroacetic acid dissolved in 2 mL of water. The beaker is capped until airtight and the solution is stirred at 90°C for 4.5h. The flask is then cooled down to room temperature and 2 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate dissolved in a minimum amount of water is added to the contents. The flask is then placed in a refridgerator for 2 days to precipitate crude product out. The contents are then filtered and the residue is recrystallized with hot ethanol.
