Synthesis of 2-Ethoxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)-6-iodophenol

5.7 g of 5-Iodoethylvanillin is dissolved in 20 mL of ethanol and the flask is then immersed in an ice bath. A slow addition of 0.75 g of sodium borohydride dissolved in 5.7 mL of 1M aq. NaOH solution with constant stirring is started. The temperature must be kept under 20°C.  After which the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1h, thereafter the mixture is acidifed with hydrochloric acid until the generation of hydrogen gas deceases. The mixture is cooled down in a refrigerator, filtered and washed with water.
