Synthesis of 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-nitropropane

4.8 g of 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-nitropropene is dissolved in 70 mL of ethanol in a beaker immersed in an ice bath. With vigorous stirring, a slow addition of 1.8 grams of sodium borohydride over the course of 45 minutes is started. The temperature must be below 15°C. The suspension is stirred for 3o minutes in the ice bath and another 1h at room temperature. The reaction is completed by boiling it for a few seconds. The mixture is cooled down and acidified to a pH of 6 with hydrochloric acid. The mixture is filtered, washed with cold isopropyl alcohol and dried in open air.
