Synthesis of Sulfur Dichloride

To a reflux apparatus equipped with dry chlorine bubbler add 205.5 g (121 mL) of disulfur dichloride and 0.2g of iron wool, the rate of chlorine gas passed through should be about 3-4 bubbles per second. After 30 minutes of chlorination, the solution is distilled at 60°C, the distillate is pure sulfur dichloride. The sulfur dichloride should be used right away since it decomposes, it may be stabilized with traces of phosphorous trichloride. Sulfur dichloride is best to be stored in ampoules.
