Preparation of Pyridinium Hexachloroplumbate(IV)

To a beaker add 20 g of very finely powdered lead(II) chloride and 400 mL of conc. HCl, then start a stream of chlorine gas (2-3 bubbles per second). The solution becomes yellow in about 2-3 h, stop the chlorine addition and cool the solution down to 0°C. Add 10 g of pyridine with some stirring, filter and wash with 50 mL of ethanol. Dry at 50°C and store the moisture sensitive compound in a moisture tight container.

PbCl2 + 2 HCl + Cl2 +2 C5H5N  = (C5H5NH)2PbCl6
